Issue 2: Devotional

Issue 2: Devotional was a performance and visual art exhibition installed in the church-turned-artspace, The Church Troy, in Troy NY. Together with my curatorial project, FOUR-D, we produced this event which included works by 35 artists installed throughout the church. Guests were invited to explore areas of the church that they would not normally be allowed to see.

Each artist created a written work to go along with their exhibited work. The collection of writing was compiled as a book which was given to visitors to provide further context for each piece.

Exhibition Press Release:

FOUR-D Projects presents ISSUE TWO: Devotional, an interdisciplinary exhibition and performance night. The second in a series of shows that seek to string together the written, the visual, and the performative, ISSUE TWO: Devotional begins with of a preliminary half-hour reading—during which the audience is asked to engage with a series of writings about each artwork they are about to see—followed by a performative interpretation of the works, and finally the visual works themselves.

In the current political and social climate, sometimes it seems as if everything is slipping away. This exhibition is comprised of 30 responses to the questions What are you holding on to? What’s holding on to you? From dance to film to sculpture, the artists in this exhibition use their chosen form to express feelings of longing and trauma. A bisected airplane reveals passengers bored by the constancy of their movement, forgetting that they are suspended in the sky. A woman struggles up a ladder bearing a heavy bundle of rice, which hits the ground only to be gathered again. Small acetate boxes full of sand are symbolic trophies of a captured multitude.
